Eric J. Munson, Ph.D. – Senior Consultant

Dr. Eric J. Munson serves as Senior Consultant at KAS. Dr. Munson received his B.A. degree from Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. After studying one year in Munich, Germany, on a Fulbright Fellowship, he continued his education at Texas A&M University, where he received his Ph. D. degree in 1993. He then spent one year as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California, Berkeley, under the direction of Professor Alexander Pines. In 1994 he became an Assistant Professor in the Chemistry Department at the University of Minnesota, and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2000. In 2001 he moved to the Pharmaceutical Chemistry Department at the University of Kansas, where he was promoted to Professor in 2006. Dr. Munson is currently the Patrick DeLuca Endowed Professor in Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Kentucky.  His research program is focused on the characterization of pharmaceutical solids using a variety of analytical techniques, with an emphasis on solid-state NMR spectroscopy. He is a recipient of an NSF CAREER award and a McKnight Land-Grant Professorship. A list of Dr. Munson’s publications is available here.

John P. Heinrich, Ph.D. – Managing Partner

Dr. Heinrich is the managing partner of KAS. Dr. Heinrich received a B.S. in 1969 and a Ph.D. in 1976 in metallurgical engineering, both from the University of Notre Dame. Dr. Heinrich has served in a variety of senior management positions for companies in scientific instrumentation and medical imaging.

Matthew Nethercott, Ph.D. – Senior Analyst

Dr. Nethercott completed his undergraduate studies in chemistry and mathematics at Niagara University and was awarded his Ph.D. in chemistry from Michigan State University in March 2012. His Ph.D. work was based on the application of solid state NMR to HIV proteins. Beginning in April 2012 he was a postdoctoral student in Eric Munson’s lab at the University of Kentucky, performing solid state NMR analysis of pharmaceutical compounds. Dr. Nethercott joined KAS in February 2014.

Michael Hanrahan, Ph.D. – Analyst

Dr. Hanrahan completed his undergraduate studies in chemistry at the University of Nebraska at Kearney and was awarded his Ph.D. in chemistry from Iowa State University in July of 2020 under the guidance of Dr. Aaron Rossini. Dr. Hanrahan’s Ph.D. work focused on the development of new solid-state NMR methods to improve the sensitivity of NMR. Dr. Hanrahan is familiar with a broad range of solid-state NMR methods including homonuclear decoupling, fast MAS, indirect detection and dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) NMR methods. Dr. Hanrahan joined the KAS staff in August of 2020.
